The General Practitioner major is continuing to attract much interest due to developments in medicine and the increasing demand for health care workers. In contrast to Specialists, GPs are trained in many different aspects. They learn how to work at medical centers and how to treat patients at home, how to practice prevention and on-going health care, how to organize and manage community health services and, at the same time, to participate in training and research.

 

Duration: 6 years, with the first year concentrating on learning English.

 

Training program

 

- Students will complete 267 credits, excluding Physical Education and National Defense Education, in: 

- General knowledge: 32 credits

- Health: 34 credits

- Health Sciences: 16 credits 

- Group work: 28 credits

- Compulsory: 26 credits

The major

- Internship and graduation thesis: 11 credits

General Practitioners are trained in medical ethics, basic science, clinical and community health, how to combine modern and traditional medical treatments, research techniques and ways of improving health care and protection. They are also required to achieve an English proficiency of 5.0 in IELTS. 

 

Working skills

 

- Diagnose and deal with common diseases and emergency procedures.

- Diagnose various other diseases.

- Specify and evaluate basic functional testing and techniques for the diagnosis of common diseases.

- Propose appropriate health care solutions and ways of improving community health and environmental protection.

- Conduct simple medical tests in the community.

- Detect early the epidemics and participate in epidemic prevention.

- Apply traditional medicine in treatment and prevention.

- Advise on, organize and provide health education and work to improve and protect patient health.

- Participate in research.

- Speak at least one foreign language and develop computer expertise to broaden professional skills.

- Additional soft skills will be developed to improve logical thinking, problem solving, research skills and others.

 

Career prospects

 

- Graduates will work in hospitals, medical centers, medical training centers, research institutes, or as health sector regulators, in governmental and other organizations.

- Treatment centers: doctors involved in treatment and management in public and private hospitals.

- Training centers: lecturers in universities, colleges, vocational schools and education management.

- Research institutes: specialists in Health Sciences, Medicine and Medical Technology.

- Management agencies: specialists in medical management, staff in governmental and other organizations.

 

- DTU has signed agreements with 18 hospitals, including the Danang Hospital, the Danang C hospital, the Military Hospital 17, Hospital 199 of the Ministry of Public Security, the Quang Nam Central General Hospital, the Family Hospital and others to provide practical experience and internships.
