On June 28, the 2024 QS World University Rankings were released by the U.K.-based education organization Quacquarelli Symonds, with five Vietnamese universities included:
1. DTU # 514
2. Ton Duc Thang University # 721-730
3. VNU (HCM) # 951-1000
3. VNU Hanoi # 951-1000
5. Hanoi University of Science & Technology # 1201-1400.
DTU rose from the 801-1000 range in 2023 to 514th in 2024, maintaining its leadership in Vietnam, with the highest rank that any Vietnamese university has ever achieved. Ton Duc Thang University entered the top 1000 universities worldwide, along with four others from last year, up from 1001-1200 in 2023 to 721-730 in 2024, rising from fourth to second place in Vietnam.
Vietnam National University (VNU) in HCMC and Hanoi dropped to 951-1000 in 2024 from 801-1000, and now share third position in Vietnam. The Hanoi University of Science & Technology maintains its position at 1201-1400 and comes 5th in Vietnam.
In 2023, the six academic indicators were: Academic Reputation (30%); Employer Reputation (15%); Faculty Student Ratio (10%); Citations per Faculty (20%); International Faculty Ratio (5%); and International Students Ratio (5%). In 2024, QS World University Rankings has added three new metrics, to the largest number ever: International Research Network (5%); Employment Outcomes (5%); and Sustainability (5%).
Vietnamese university rankings in 2024 by the nine criteria:
- Academic Reputation - VNU HCMC continues to lead at 16.9, but falls from 20.5. All universities listed have lower scores for this criterion, except for DTU
- Employer Reputation - VNU HCMC leads with 26.4, up from 18.5, followed by DTU at 26.3 which also increased its score from 24.7. All the universities rose in this criterion
- Faculty Student Ratio - VNU Hanoi continues to lead, at 9.4, but is down from 12.1
- Citations per Faculty - Ton Duc Thang University ranks at 34.6, up sharply from 16.0
- International Faculty Ratio - DTU remains in top position at 37.0, with a slight decrease from 37.6
- International Student Ratio - Ton Duc Thang University ranks first at 1.6, compared to 1.8, while there was little change in the other listed scores for this criterion
- International Research Network - Ton Duc Thang University retains first, with 84.9, down from 91.3
- Employment Outcomes - VNU HCMC leads with 21.6, but with a significant drop from 33.6. All listed scores for this criterion fell.
- Sustainability - DTU ranks first, at 57.4
In 2024, QS WUR ranked 1,499 universities in 104 countries and territories, with results assessed by the analysis of 17.5 million papers and the expert opinions of 240,000 academics.
QS Founder and President, Nunzio Quacquarelli, said: “Over the past 20 years, we have always tried to remain consistent in our methodology, but must also evolve to reflect the changing missions of universities. We recognize that the global student community that we serve understands the significance of the climate crisis and we believe that there is major responsibility among universities to support the sustainability agenda.”

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topped the QS rankings for the 12th year in a row. The University of Cambridge retains 2nd place while the University of Oxford has replaced Stanford University at third. European and American universities dominate the top 10 rankings, many of which received perfect scores of 100 points for indicators such as: Academic Reputation; Employer Reputation; and Faculty/Student Ratio.
Eighty-five new entrants are listed, with more than half from Asia, including 11 from Bangladesh, 10 from Indonesia, India and Malaysia with 5 each, and 4 from Kazakhstan. In Southeast Asia, Malaysia takes the lead, with 28 ranked universities, followed by Indonesia with 26, Thailand 13, Vietnam 5, the Philippines 5, Singapore 4, and Brunei 2. With only four higher education institutions on the list, Singapore still leads in the region, with the National University of Singapore moving up three places from last year's rankings to 8th this year, the only Asian university to break into the top 10.
