Vietnam still has no universities listed in the in top 400 in Asia. China leads the rankings for the first time, with Tsinghua University overtaking the National University of Singapore (NUS) for first place. This is also the first time that a Chinese university has topped the table. This year’s table ranks more than 400 universities, up from over 350 last year. The list includes 27 countries and regions.
The 2019 Asia University Top 10
Overall, there are 72 Chinese universities listed, up from 63 last year. Once again Japan leads with 103 universities, up from 89.
The territory of Hong Kong has 3 universities in the top 10, with another 6 in the top 70. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology now leads at third, replacing the University of Hong Kong, at fourth.
Singapore is a most-represented country in Southeast Asian, with two institutions in the top 10, the National University of Singapore is ranked second and the Nanyang Technological University sixth. Elsewhere, the national flagship universities in Indonesia and Malaysia all rank higher, with the University of Malaysia making its debut in the top 40, climbing eight places to joint 38, while the University of Indonesia is now ranked 133, up from the 201-250 band.
The Asia University Rankings are based on 13 performance indicators, which are grouped into five areas: teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.
The Asia rankings use the same 13 measurement factors as the World University Rankings, recalibrated to reflect the different attributes of Asian institutions.
There are currently several other university rankings using different criteria. The well-known Times Higher Education World Universities rankings focus on research and is the most trusted by governments and universities around the world.
At a Vietnamese University Ranking Conference in early 2018, Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University showed an interest in participating in the World University Rankings.
Currently Vietnamese universities participate in the UK’s QS Quacquarelli Symonds survey, produced by an international higher education company, best known for its university ranking systems. In the 2019 QS Asia rankings, seven Vietnamese universities made it to the list of the top 505 Asian universities. They were the Vietnam National University in Hanoi, at 124, the Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh city, at 144, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, between 261 and 270, Ton Duc Thang University in Ho Chi Minh city, 291-300, Can Tho University, 351-400, Hue University and Danang University, 451-500.
Before announcing the 2019 Asia University Rankings, THE highlighted the Vietnamese universities that were the most appropriate for those who wanted to come to study in Vietnam from abroad. They were Bach Khoa University, Can Tho University, Duy Tan University, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hue University, Ton Duc Thang University, the Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh city and the Vietnam National University in Hanoi.
The University Impact Rankings is a system which measures the success of higher education institutions in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to UN standards. The University Impact Rankings consist of 11 of the 17 UN SDGs, with Ton Duc Thang University currently ranked 101-200.
